LGBTQ+

Rights

Carma’s lived experience as a Black Trans Woman gives her a unique and first-hand perspective that is further needed in regard to LGBTQ+ Rights. This work is deeply personal and rooted in a desire to actively foster community and wellness. With her work as President of Fem Club, Co-Chair of the Trans Wellness Coalition, and her volunteer work with both The Fairness campaign and Louisville Youth Group, it is evident that this a labor of love, community care, and resistance rooted in joy.

In her personal life, Carma mentors gender diverse children into adulthood, a task that is becoming more difficult as time goes on with the passing of Anti-LGBTQ+ bills that target access to healthcare, outing of identity and other laws dedicated to sequestering a piece of their electorate to second class citizenship. A prime example is found in the “Save Women’s Sports Act”. This act is but another attempt by those who wish we didn’t exist to create barriers and normalize the discrimination of trans children within sports.

In the realm of education, Carma has provided council and safe spaces to students within the JCPS system to express and exist as themselves as they experience higher incidences of harassment. She has provided support to a trans female student who was assaulted in a bathroom by another female student. Where she was physically dragged and removed from the restroom. This environment is a by product of the vitriol and contempt held for gender diverse and non-conforming individuals, and it comes from the top, it’s not shocking that while this is happening there is a bill being proposed that would criminalize schools for even allowing trans students to play in sport to begin with. This is not acceptable and does not reflect the KY Carma was born and raised in.
