Racial

Injustice

As a person of color growing up in Shelbyville, Kentucky, Carma faced discrimination and racial inequities that influenced her experiences from early childhood. Her father, a man who was one when African Americans were given the right to vote, worked tirelessly to create a safe and inclusive environment for her and her brother. Despite this, Carma has witnessed the Klu Klux Klan (KKK), a domestic terrorist group, in close proximity.

The legacy of slavery and Jim Crow, along with contemporary issues like resource disparities and gentrification, have contributed to a culture of racism that Louisville Kentucky is no stranger to. The systemic racism within the city's police force, as reported by the Justice Department, has only served to exacerbate these issues.

To achieve true freedom and equality for all, equitable solutions are needed, including restructuring of procedures, protocols, and the building of trust between the police force and the community. There is also a need for affirmative actions as to build the places that experience the most harm from this system and address the needs of those who go under represented and unprotected due to the color of their skin and/or ancestry.
